Sarcoma (Soft Tissue Cancer)

9/11 Sarcoma (Soft Tissue Cancers) Compensation Claims

Sarcoma, or soft tissue cancer, has led to thousands of compensation claims for 9/11 responders and downtown area workers and residents who were present in lower Manhattan either on 9/11 or any time through May 30, 2002. Sarcoma is one of over 76 types of cancer that the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) has linked to the post-9/11 toxic fumes and dust. Those who have been diagnosed with 9/11-related sarcoma are often eligible to file a compensation claim with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF), which covers both pain and suffering as well as economic losses such as medical expenses and lost earnings.

The Link Between 9/11 and Sarcomas

When the WTC fell, a cloud of dust and debris was released that covered Manhattan and the surrounding area for several months afterward. Often called 9/11 dust, this toxic cloud contained a hazardous mix of asbestos, glass fibers, cement, lead, heavy metals, and other substances. Many of these harmful substances are carcinogens known to cause various types of cancer, including soft tissue cancers. Sarcomas develop in any part of the body, including the bones and soft tissues, which includes fat, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, deep skin tissues, and fibrous tissues. While sarcomas are rare cancers in the general population, sarcomas are diagnosed at a higher rate in the 9/11 community.

Common Symptoms of Soft Tissue Cancers

Symptoms of soft tissue cancers vary depending on the location of the tumor. Some sarcomas may not cause symptoms in the early stages, while other sarcomas may feel like a painless lump under your skin, and others don’t cause pain until they grow large enough to press on an organ. Other sarcomas can cause long-lasting bone pain or swelling in your extremities, which may limit your movement.

Common symptoms of soft tissue cancers may include:

  • A new lump or swelling in a bone or soft tissue that may or may not hurt;
  • Pain in an extremity (arm/leg) or abdomen/pelvis;
  • Trouble moving your arm or leg (a limp or limited range of motion);
  • Unexplained weight loss; and/or
  • Back pain.

Sarcoma shares symptoms with many other conditions, highlighting the importance of ongoing cancer screening to ensure early detection of sarcoma.

How to Know if You Qualify For Soft Tissue Cancer Compensation From 9/11 Exposure

The VCF was created to provide financial compensation to those who suffered losses from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Eligibility for compensation from the VCF for 9/11-related sarcoma depends on several factors. These include:

  • Registering and filing a claim with the VCF by the applicable deadlines;
  • Providing evidence of the 9/11-related illness;
  • Showing proof of presence in the Exposure Zone between September 11, 2001 and May 30, 2002, along the routes of debris removal (responders only), or at one of the other crash sites, including the Pentagon site or the Shanksville, Pennsylvania site; and
  • Registering with the WTCHP by the deadline to have the cancer certified as a 9/11-related health condition.

Consulting with a knowledgeable 9/11 attorney can help you determine your eligibility for compensation.

Sarcoma Treatment Options Through the WTC Health Program

The WTC Health Program was created to address the unique health challenges faced by 9/11 responders and individuals who were present in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. Multiple Clinical Centers of Excellence (CCE) are available throughout New York (NY), with a Nationwide Provider Network (NPN) to provide services for members outside the NY area. These clinics provide a range of medical services for early detection and treatment of 9/11-related conditions, addressing both physical and mental health concerns.

Treatment options for sarcoma are based on the individual needs of the patient. There are over 70 types of sarcoma, and they have all been certified by the WTCHP and recognized as 9/11-related health conditions. Treatment will depend on the type of sarcoma the patient has and what stage it is in.  Options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
