President Trump Approves Permanent 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Extension to 2092

This is a significant but sad day for the entire 9/11 community. President Donald Trump just signed the permanent extension of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. The new Zadroga Act has been renamed the “Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer, and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the September 11 Victim Compensation Act”.

The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund will provide awards and payouts for first responders and Downtown Manhattan residents, workers, and students with cancer and other illnesses until 2092.

As experienced attorneys who have been representing the 9/11 community since 2001, we are grateful to all those in the 9/11 community who made this day possible. We see and hear each and every day just how much this funding is necessary, how 9/11 cancers and conditions have impacted the health and lives of so many, and the panic that struck each of our client’s minds at the news that this funding was running low and payouts would be cut last February.

Today, we can assure our clients that the funding will continue, and Turley, Hansen & Rosasco, LLP will continue to fight for the compensation each and every Downtown worker, resident, student and first responder deserves. 

We look back on the number of individuals it took to get this bill to the finish line – many of whom never got to see it get its final signature of approval. We are reminded of the great sacrifice that many gave, as they rushed to the Twin Towers, selflessly putting everyone else before themselves. We are reminded of those who fought 9/11 cancer battles and treatments for other related conditions – with unwavering determination so that they could join the team of advocates pushing for this bill to move forward.

To say it took a village of first responders, police officers, firefighters and EMTs, those from the cleanup and recovery operations, survivors who lived, worked or went to school in Downtown Manhattan to get this bill passed – is an understatement. We have proudly stood by these incredible individuals, alongside other political voices and advocates, and are overwhelmed with the fact that we are finally seeing this long overdue outcome.

When Jon Stewart spoke in Congress, sitting beside now late NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez and a crowd of 9/11 first responders who had all become ill due to their time at Ground Zero, the country shook. Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader (R-KY) days later, could see the “urgency” for himself, as he met and spoke to first responders in person. With an overwhelming amount of support from Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York), among others, we saw the bill pass in the House in mid-July, and watched the Senate pass the bill on July 23, 2019 with a landslide vote of 97-2.

On Monday, July 29, 2019, President Trump held a bill-signing ceremony, surrounded by first responders and survivors in the White House. Included in the guest list were the families for whom the bill is now named after: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer, and Luis Alvarez. To have the bill signed by the President – and surrounded by individuals who have long been awaiting this day – was a special sight to see for the 9/11 community. Thank you to every individual and voice that allowed this bill to finally cross the finish line today.
