How Do I Identify Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancers among survivors of the 9/11 terror attacks, as well as Downtown New York City residents, workers, and students who were present in the area the day of and thereafter. That’s why if you lived, worked, or spent time in Lower Manhattan between September 11, 2001, and May 30, 2002, it’s especially important to know how to identify skin cancer.
Know What You’re Looking For
The deadliest form of skin cancer is known as melanoma. It’s critical to identify melanoma as early as possible. This can be done by performing self-examinations regularly. To spot both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, you’ll need to take note of any new moles or growths on your body.
Also, remember to keep an eye on existing moles or growths that begin to grow or change in any way. Some more obvious red flags include any lesions that start to change, itch, or bleed and never seem to heal. Read on for more information about how to spot skin cancer.
The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer
- Asymmetry: One side of the mole doesn’t match the other.
- Borders: Irregularities in mole borders.
- Colors: Mole with colors that are not uniform.
- Diameter: The diameter of a suspicious mole is anything larger than 6 millimeters – which is roughly the size of a pencil eraser.
- Evolving: A mole that is continuously evolving and changing (e.g., size, shape, or color).
If you notice any of the ABCDEs of skin cancer, consult with your doctor immediately. Several treatment options are available; however, the key is early detection.
