9/11 Benefits for Wall Street and Other Financial Workers in Downtown Manhattan
If you worked in the NYC “Exposure Zone” (most of lower Manhattan) during or after 9/11, you are likely eligible to receive FREE 9/11-related lifetime healthcare, and a lifetime of medical monitoring plus tax-free financial compensation. Workers who were in downtown New York City any time from 9/11 to May 30, 2002 and who got sick any time since then (including with any type of cancer) should learn about their legal options and benefits by calling an experienced 9/11 attorney from Hansen & Rosasco, LLP.
Downtown Wall Street and other financial service workers — bankers, traders, brokers, exchange workers, insurance company employees, Federal Reserve workers, and tens of thousands of others — who were Downtown on or after 9/11 and since got sick with any type of cancer are likely eligible for a payment from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. The 9/11 Fund is NOT just for first responders — it provides for financial awards and payments to anyone who worked Downtown on or any time during the eight and a half months after 9/11.
Our lawyers have helped thousands of Downtown Wall Street and other financial services workers receive the maximum compensation payment as well as get them lifetime health benefits for all 9/11-related health issues, including over 70 different types of cancer.
After the Twin Towers fell, all of lower Manhattan (as far north as Houston Street and also Brooklyn Heights) was blanketed in a layer of dust that contained more than 2,500 toxic contaminants. Many of those contaminants were carcinogenic and, when combined, created a toxic mess never before seen or studied by the public health experts. Jet fuel (that included benzene, ethylbenzene, and other toxins) burned day and night for months, adding to the toxicity in the air and water.
New York’s Downtown residents and workers breathed in this dangerous air. They did this because the EPA and city officials told them it was safe. These EPA officials encouraged workers to go back to their jobs so that the economy could stay afloat. Now, many of these financial workers in Downtown Manhattan are sick or suffering. Many have lost their lives in the years since September 11, 2001 due to a 9/11-caused cancer, often unaware of the proven link between the 9/11 toxic dust and a cancer or other deadly condition that developed even many years later.
To help those individuals and their families, the federal government created two separate programs: The World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) and the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). Both programs help victims of 9/11 (one program providing health coverage and the other providing cash compensation), including financial services and all other workers in Downtown Manhattan.
The WTCHP gives eligible financial services workers (and all other Downtown workers) a lifetime of free healthcare and medical monitoring. All 9/11-related illnesses can receive treatment free of charge at any of the Clinical Centers of Excellence in New York and New Jersey, or by visiting a doctor or treatment center in the nationwide network of providers.
The VCF gives financial services and other Downtown workers who got sick after 9/11 payment of financial compensation for pain and suffering, the cost of medical expenses, and lost wages. As with many programs run by the federal government, it’s a time-consuming and complicated process to receive VCF compensation, which is why the majority of 9/11 survivors and the families who lost loved ones are represented by an experienced 9/11 attorney.
Why Choose Us?
At Hansen & Rosasco, LLP, our 9/11 attorneys know firsthand the devastation of 9/11. We’re a firm made up of lifelong New Yorkers, we too have lost family and friends in the attacks that day, as well as seen our friends and family pass or get diagnosed with a 9/11 cancer over the years since. We saw the City band together to rise above the destruction and we witnessed the grit of the many workers who put their fear aside and went back to work to keep Manhattan running.
Our experience helping 9/11 victims began in the first month that followed the attack. A widow reached out to our law firm for help after she lost her husband. Our law firm took her case free of charge and helped her and her children recover the money they needed.
From that day forward, we have helped 9/11 survivors and their families. We’ve dedicated our entire law practice to representing just the 9/11 population — it’s all that we do. We even spent considerable time lobbying for the passage of the law in 2015 that extended the WTCHP to the year 2090 and in 2019 fighting for the passage of the Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer, and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act that extended the 9/11 VCF also to the year 2090.
Our firm’s devotion to the 9/11 population has resulted in notable awards to 9/11 financial workers:
- $3.4 million award for Wall Street professional with 9/11-related breast cancer
- $3.0 million award for the spouse of a Wall Street broker who died from multiple myeloma
- $2.1 million award for the death of a finance broker after battling colon cancer
- $1.3 million award for Wall Street VP with 9/11 multiple myeloma
- $975,000 award for bank officer disabled by severe asthma and breathing disorders
- $829,000 award for Wall Street broker with 9/11 sarcoidosis
- $806,000 award for investment consultant with chronic tracheitis and RADS
- $685,000 award for Wall Street trader with Polycythemia vera blood cancer
You can rest assured knowing you have a premier team of highly professional and experienced 9/11 attorneys on your side. We know how to get your case evaluated and approved quickly, so you can begin receiving the benefits, treatment, and maximum financial award possible.
Who Can Receive Help?
From stockbrokers to hedge fund managers, these financial workers were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. To keep Wall Street running and the economy from collapsing, many of these financial workers went back to work even though the air was still thick and everything coated in dust. They did not realize they were breathing in toxic chemicals and cancer-causing toxins. Yet, they were.
Now, many of them have battled or now fight chronic and disabling lung conditions and cancers. They face unimaginable futures and painful treatment. It is up to us to support them and help them get the compensation and medical care they need to move forward in their lives.
To date, more than 11,000 downtown workers, many of whom are financial services workers, have registered for compensation through the VCF and for free lifetime 9/11-related healthcare from the WTCHP. Downtown Manhattan area workers make up the second-largest group of registered claimants after first responders.
Yet, there are hundreds of thousands more who may qualify and who are not aware that they do. Many of these workers no longer live or work in New York, yet they still qualify. Many are unaware that all individuals who were in the NYC “Exposure Zone” after 9/11 may be eligible for payouts from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). This includes 9/11 victims who either worked, lived, or went to school in this area, and who in the past 20 years or now suffer from a 9/11-related illness or cancer. This includes over 70 cancers, as well as dozens of respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses such as asthma, GERD, and COPD. We compiled a list of 9/11 cancers and illnesses to better help you.
However, even if you do not see your illness or condition listed, you may still qualify. As such, it is important to speak to an experienced 9/11 attorney as soon as possible to learn more about your options and begin building your case.
Applying for the WTCHP and VCF
At Hansen & Rosasco, LLP, our 9/11 attorneys can help you through the WTC Health Program application process. Getting your illness certified is the first step towards collecting the benefits and support you need.
To get your application approved by the WTCHP, you must establish your presence in this Exposure Zone between 9/11/01 and 07/31/02. You must also have a 9/11 related medical illness, cancer, or disabling respiratory condition. The WTCHP Exposure Zone runs south of Houston Street and any block in Brooklyn within the 1.5-mile radius of the World Trade Center site. This includes much of Brooklyn Heights.
A 9/11 attorney from Hansen & Rosasco, LLP can help you by gathering the evidence and documents you need to get your application approved quickly. We can gather work records, signed witness affidavits, and medical documents to help establish your case to the WTCHP. If you received a denial, we can help you through the appeal process.
Once the WTCHP approves your application and certifies your illness or medical condition, we can then continue to seek compensation from the VCF. Getting a financial award from the VCF is more difficult than getting approved to be a part of the WTCHP. Getting approved by the VCF requires having a WTCHP certified medical condition, as well as Proof of Presence in the VCF Exposure Zone. The VCF Exposure Zone is smaller than the WTCHP Exposure Zone. To show Proof of Presence, you must have worked or simply been present in the 9/11 VCF Exposure Zone any time between 9/11/01 and 05/30/02.
Generally, the 9/11 Exposure Zone includes the Pentagon, Shanksville, PA, the World Trade Center area plus all of Downtown Manhattan below Canal Street, west to the Hudson River, and east below Clinton Street to the East River. In addition, the Exposure Zone includes the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island, the route trucks and barges that travelled to remove 9/11 debris, places where emergency vehicles were cleaned, and the New York City Morgue.
If you worked on Wall Street or near Wall Street in the financial district, you will likely qualify. However, gathering the critical evidence is often difficult. This is because people retire, businesses close, managers move away and official documents get purged. As such, getting access to the records you need to show proof is not easy and can take considerable time and resources. That is where we come in. At Hansen & Rosasco, LLP, our lawyers know where to look to get the information needed to achieve a successful outcome for our clients.
Downtown Financial Workers Affected by 9/11
There was a large population of financial services workers on Wall Street and in the surrounding areas who, since 9/11, got sick with digestive disorders, breathing conditions, or any one of 70+ different types of cancers after they unknowingly were exposed to hazardous toxins either on September 11th or during the many months that followed. Many of our clients at Hansen & Rosasco, LLP have called us to confirm that their illness is 9/11-related, including various types of cancer such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, or lung cancer. We’ve represented many financial services workers, winning them some of the highest awards made by the 9/11 VCF.
For example, our WTC lawyers represented and won a VCF award or over $2,900,000 for a 9/11 victim who worked in the Financial District in Downtown Manhattan. This Downtown Manhattan client was completely disabled from her work due to breast cancer, which required multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and reconstructive surgery. And this was not the only one of our clients who returned to work in Lower Manhattan, thinking it was safe. We now know just how untrue that was.
We have helped numerous financial workers in Manhattan collect the money they needed to tackle their illness and move forward after their 9/11 diagnosis, including:
- Wall Street brokers
- NYSE floor workers and support staff
- Investment bankers
- Clerks
- Financial advisors
- Salespeople
- Hedge fund managers
- IT support professionals
- Private banking and wealth managers
These are just some of the various financial professionals who worked on Wall Street or in Downtown Manhattan on 9/11 or in the months following the attacks who later got sick as a result of the toxic dust.
Unfortunately, most financial professionals do not realize that they qualify for these programs and for financial awards. They erroneously believe that these 9/11 programs are only for first responders and their families. However, these programs are for everyone who experienced harm or suffering because of September 11th.
When President Trump signed the “Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act,” into law, the VCF and WTCHP became fully funded through 2090. This means that victims, workers, first responders, survivors, and their families have 70 years to file claims. However, act quickly to avoid missing other critical deadlines and to have the best chance of winning a successful award.
At Hansen & Rosasco, LLP, our 9/11 attorneys are here to talk with you about your case and your illness. We want to hear your story and learn more about where you were in the months that followed the attacks. We can then use this information to help you explore all your options carefully.
