What is Sleep Apnea and How Does it Affect Those Who Suffer from the Condition?
Sleep apnea (or obstructive sleep apnea) is a disorder that is common among people who were exposed to the toxins from the site of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. A person with sleep apnea has one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths that can last from as short as just a few seconds to as long as over one minute. Sometimes, these pauses can happen as often as 30 times or more per hour. Normal breathing starts again on its own, but with a loud snorting, choking, or gasping sound. Sleep apnea is a chronic long-term condition that disrupts sleep. As a result, people who suffer from this condition get a poor night’s sleep and are prone to becoming sleepy during the day.
How Do I Know If I Have Sleep Apnea?
Most people afflicted with sleep apnea don’t even know they have it, since the symptoms occur during sleep. Oftentimes, a spouse or partner will notice the signs of the condition. Sleep apnea cannot be detected by a routine doctor’s office visit or blood test. It’s tested and diagnosed by a sleep study conducted at a sleep disorder center or clinic during an overnight visit.
What is the Most Common Form of Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of this condition. With obstructive sleep apnea, the person’s airway collapses or becomes blocked when the muscles in the back of the throat relax and the airway narrows, resulting in the inability to get a full or adequate breath.
In addition to daytime fatigue, sleep apnea can cause other complications such as high blood pressure and heart problems. This leads to the risk of a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, and stroke. One of the most effective treatments for sleep apnea is the use of a nighttime CPAP machine.
How 9/11 Contributed to the Development of Sleep Apnea
Medical studies of people exposed to the 9/11-related dust, debris, and fumes reveal that they have developed respiratory disease or acid reflux, with more than 62% having obstructive sleep apnea. In some cases, individuals have developed severe sleep apnea, making them unable to work and live normal lives.
Sleep apnea is recognized as an eligible condition under the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) and the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF), and these programs provide free lifetime medical care and compensation for sufferers.
The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund in particular often awards some of its larger non-cancer compensation payouts to claimants who suffer from sleep apnea. Our WTC lawsuit lawyers will fight to get you the deserved 9/11 VCF awards for how your life was affected by the September 11th attacks.
